I'd give $100 for a 10D body for a backup camera. But I already own an XTi for a backup. If I could, I'd get it converted for astro work through Hap Griffin. You can have that standard filter replaced with a Baader/UV/IR filter that opens up the full dynamic range of the sensor while retaining the proper focus.

Also exposure time is very long with a R72 filter, sometimes 8 to 10 seconds just to expose a full daylight scene. With a converted body you exposure times are around back to normal.

Another disadvantage of can think of with a R72 filter is that is causes hot spots in the middle of your image on half of the lenses that Canon produces. There is a good/bad list of lenses to use with a IR filter somewhere out there on the internet.

My 50 has a hotspot in the middle! easy fix, but sucks!

Now, to the first part, I was wondering if you put a R72 on, and use Live View, if you can actually see the scene?

I have yet to try that on the 5dII!

It seems any old manual lens with a R72 filter on Canon bodies do well without any hotspots. Live view on the Canon bodies does work with R72 filters and is a huge advantage for IR work.

I kinda of thought that it might work. I was just reading this old post, and I though, "he this might work on my 5dII, now that I have live view. Cause I could not see shit on the 20d! lol

Live view is presenting the image view in real time as the light hits the sensor versus looking through the viewfinder off the mirror and through the lens which really sucks when a R72 filter is attached to your lens.

I'm gonna try it once the trees fill in. I have not used that filter in a couple years! lol
