No need to cower from MY level of expertise .. ha. :-)
Actually, the Canon 70-200L f/2.8 is currently in short supply because of the demand for that awesome lens. But on the other hand, with today's DSLRs able to handle super-high ISOs, the f/4.0 may be the way to go due to the size and weight of the f/2.8. My 70-200L f/2.8 weighs the same as my 100-400L and both of them together in a backpack makes for a real load if you're packing them on the trail all day. The main advantage of the f/2.8 is the ability to use the shallow DOF for isolating your subject. But then there's Photoshop ....
